LA PAZ TACO TOUR
A LITTLE BACKGROUND:
You're about to head out on a unique culinary experience! Many visitors to La Paz will never or could never find some of the places you will visit or would be hesitant to eat there. Half the fun of visiting new places and meeting new people is going out to eat and sampling the local cuisine. In Mexico, more than 85 percent of it's people regularly eat at their local taco stands ("taquerias"). These can range from little street carts to larger and more established buildings. Many of the street carts evolved into buildings and the original carts can often be seen in the architecture!
Each neighborhood seems to have it's own favorite taqueria where the food is inexpensive and fast; the salsas are flavorful; and all your neighbors use it as a social gathering spot! Much like burger stands in your own home town, each taqueria builds a reputation for best salsas, best meats, best tortillas, funniest chef, etc! You will see numerous taco stands throughout Mexico, but let the "locals" be your guide! If you see lots of people at a certain taqueria and no one at the next place, there's probably a reason! Eat at the taco stand that has all the people!
THE PLACES TO VISIT:
We try to give you a good sampling of different styles of tacos found in La Paz. Where we go depends upon the night of the week; the size of the group; the tastes of the group; and just how much they can eat! We usually put 3 or 4 taco stands on any "tour", but we are flexible! If the group really falls in love with one place, we're just as happy to stay there as move on! There's no agenda. We just want you to have a good time. We always try to end the evening with La Paz world-famous home-made ice cream and a walk along the beach!
The places you will visit all have great reputations and are rather famous in La Paz. We have visited them scores of times and some of them have been featured in magazine articles and TV shows that have come to visit with us. Many groups actually bring score cards each time they visit with us so that they may compare the great food.
WARNINGS:
Much like wine-tasting…take it easy! As good as they may taste, usually no more than 3 tacos per place will do fine. They may look small, but once they are packed with salsas and condiments, they are a handful!
Salsas vary from place to place and many stands make their reputations based on their salsas. A salsa does NOT have to be hot! When in doubt, take a bit and put it on your plate first to taste it!
OUR SELECTIONS:
1. Tacos Los Faroles - Famous for tacos "al pastor" which is marinated pork roasted on a spit served on a corn or flour tortilla with minced cilantro, onions and guacamole. Grilled green onions dipped in salsa are also super. Jamaica (iced lotus tea) and Horchata (chilled cinnamon/sugar/rice drink) top a great meal. Tacos about $1.20 to $1.50 each. Drinks: $1
2. Super Burros - Carne asada tacos grilled on open flame with choice of tortillas. Excellent roasted chile salsas. Excellent charros frijoles soup (bean soup with salsa) and stuffed potatoes. They don't have "burritos," but instead have "burros" that are about 2 feet long and must be bent on a plate to be served! Tacos $1.20 each. Drinks: $1
3. Rancho Viejo - A little of everything. This place is a MUST! Eat at the street tables or in the rustic courtyard. Has become a big favorite. Only taco stand that also serves BEER! Tacos arrachera (marinated flank steak) are excellent but try the stuffed potatoes and roasted whole onions with their fantastic salsas too! Tacos - $1.20 -$1.60
4. Moyeyo's Seafood - The music is loud and the service is sometimes lacking, but they have a carnival atmosphere and the BEST seafood tacos in town from fish to scallops and calmari to lobster. If you have a real appetite - clams on the half-shell or a seafood cocktail should NOT be missed! Great fruit margueritas too! Prices range from $1.20 on up for tacos. They close by 7 p.m. however!
5. El Carrito - A little cart near the waterfront that is one of the most popular in the city, especially at night! Famous for it's roasted potatoes stuffed with cheese, butter, cream, corn, mushrooms and carne asada. It's salsa bar has over a dozen of the best salsas in the city! A potato will set you about $3.50, but is a meal all by itself or could easily be enjoyed by two.
6. The Hot Dog Cart - Hot dogs in Mexico? You bet! An outstanding discovery and a bargain to boot! On the corner near Carlos 'n' Charlies, a great place to see and be seen! You have to stand as you wiggle to eat the bacon wrapped frank in the sweet bun with mustard, catsup, mayo, minced onions, chilis and tomatoes. At 80 cents you can't go wrong and watching the vendor is like watching a Benihana chef…well, not quite. What do you want for 80 cents? !!! His burgers and burritos are super as well!
TOP IT OFF
A walk along the Malecon (seafront) and a stop at La Fuente ice cream store. Best in La Paz. World famous! You cannot leave La Paz without trying their ice cream!
BUEN PROVECHO!
(good eating!)

Don't blame your morning rush to the pot on those tacos, better chance it was the mass consumption of spirits that did you in. Street stand tacos could be just what the doctor ordered.
