Fishing Sites

Fishing sites in La Paz are separated into two areas, north and south. The two are separated by a small mountain range that divides La Paz and the Punta Arena beaches where mostly pangas are launched from Las Arenas. It is about a one hour van ride to the south side from La Paz.

If you are planning a trip ask your provider about both of these areas and which offers better fishing for your time frame. If your provider doesn't have details for both sides, run!

Las Arenas North side:
Fishing on the north side is focused around the beautiful nearby island of Isla Espiritu Santo, Isla Partida, "El Bajo" (a shallow seamount northeast of these islands), and along the rocky points of the Baja coast running "south" of La Paz.

South Side:
This area south of La Paz is known as the "Las Arenas" side which is a one hour van ride from La Paz. Mostly panga launch at the beaches of Punta Arena de la Ventana, and just to its south across a small point, the small bay of Ensenada de los Muertos, or Bay of the Dead.
The southernmost island in Baja's Sea of Cortez, Cerralvo lies between La Paz and the East Cape. Except for the panga fleets that operate from the beaches of Punta Arena de La Ventana (Las Arenas) and Bahma de Los Muertos, Cerralvo Island manages to remain relatively untouched and its environs are home to a staggering number of game fish.
This area includes La Reina (Seal Rock) about 4 miles north of Cerralvo, and Inner Montana Rock, about 3/4 mile south of Punta Sudeste at the island's south end. Inner Montana Rock has a high point of only 4 feet below the surface. Its underwater, rocky terrain continues southward in depths of 30 to 100 feet before rising abruptly again about a mile and a half offshore.
Many anglers favor this second ridge, called Montana Rock, over the Inner Rock because it's near deeper water. Within a quarter-mile, Montana Rock drops off to 100 fathoms and eventually connects with the 1,000-fathom shelf that attracts big pelagics such as blue marlin. Other productive fishing areas for pelagics include the 88-Fathom Bank 12 miles east of Cerralvo, Yellow Bluff on the northeastern side of Cerralvo, and Cerralvo Channel.
