A Sunday with Andrea & Friends

A few weeks back on a Saturday night I was pretty much getting ready to wrap up the day when Andrea stopped by to say hi. He had previously mentioned his plans to change from the class 7 truck to a class 6 Explorer. He said that before tearing into the project he and the people that have helped him over the years were going to go out and put a few laps on the truck and asked if we'd like to go. Kind of the last dance. Anyway, I said great and the next morning loaded up the entire family and headed a few miles south of La Paz to a closed circuit 1.5 mile track named Monroy.

For starters you could not have ordered up a nicer day then this. It was flawless in everyway, about 80 degrees, a slight breeze and the bright blue sky was lightly peppered with thin white clouds that made it picture prefect.

The truck was already unloaded when we arrived with Andrea's crew and families also at the ready. After Andrea making a fast round of greetings he was in the truck speeding around the track. Throwing dirt high into the air in every corner and hitting the ramp at full speed. About twenty laps later is what made this day special for all of us.

Andrea brings the truck into the make-shift pit area and his co-pilot, Jose Hurtado (Tani) starts strapping kids into his seat one at a time for their ride around the track. Now I don't mean a slow safe ride around the track and even though Andrea was not full bore or crazy, he was getting sideways in the corners and major air going over the ramp. All the kids got out of the truck with huge smiles on their faces and a little wobbly in the knees.

Then it was the wife's turn... they all got the same ride with the same results. Then the guys took their turn. Everyone who wanted and I think that was all took their turn before the truck was retired. Now here is something you would never get Andrea to admit but I do believe when it came to my ride and me being the newcomer he did put a little more into it thinking he might scare me, and in the same breath you would never get me to admit I was a little worried.

After the rides ended it was time for the debrief with the crew witch was followed by some group photo's and a damn good Bar-B-Q with all pitching in as the guys loaded the truck. The party lasted into the night with more then a few cold Tecate's finding a new home.

Andrea, thank you for such a great experience. My six year old son was so jacked up I don't think he slept that night. And a double thank you for dropping off all the autographed posters for his classmates the next morning. One of his classmates said he was also your friend, so of course Rogelio had to wear the autographed t-shirt you so graciously gave him the next day to school. "pinche chamacos".

AT Racing is not just about speed, its also about family and friends, the things that really matter.
